Civil Services

Civil Servants are the people behind implementing government and developmental policies, keeping law and order, and act as a link between the masses and the government.

Eligibility :

  • You should hold a graduate bachelor’s degree in any subject from a recognized institution. (or about to take final year examinations - All such candidates must produce proof of having passed the said examination along with the application for the main IAS examination). Candidates having professional and technical qualifications recognized by the Government as equivalent to professional and technical degrees. You can also check if your institute has MOU (E.g. ICAI has MOU with UPSC Board.) There is no minimum graduation percentage required for IAS eligibility.

  • You must be a minimum 21 years of age and maximum 32 years of age on the date of the examination (Relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST, individuals holding a domicile of Jammu & Kashmir; 3 years for OBC and defence personnel; 10 years for blind, deaf-mute and orthopedically handicapped persons.)

  • Nationality - Indian Citizens Only (For IAS, IFS and IPS)

  • Nationality - For All other Services: Candidate must be either : A citizen of India, or A subject of Nepal, or A subject of Bhutan, or A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962 intending to settle in India permanently, or A person of Indian origin (PIO) who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zaire and Vietnam intending to settle in India permanently.

Maximum number of Attempts :

General category/EWS category candidate - 6 attempts

OBC candidates - 9 attempts

SC/ST candidates - no bar on the number of attempts (they can take the exam until they reach the upper age limit)

 

EWS category with benchmark disability - 9 attempts

General and OBC physically disabled candidates - 9 attempts

SC/ST physically disabled candidates - no bar on the number of attempts

Structure of Examinations

The CSE is only conducted once a year. Conducted in namely 3 stages as follows:

UPSC PREMILS > UPSC MAINS > INTERVIEW

PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION (Commonly known as prelims)

The Examination shall comprise of two compulsory Papers of  200 marks each.

Note:

(i) Both the question papers will be of the objective type (multiple choice questions) and each will be of two hours duration.

(ii) The General Studies Paper-II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.

MAIN EXAMINATION:

The Written Examination will consist of the following papers:—

Qualifying Papers:

Paper-A (One of the Indian Language to be selected by the candidate from the Languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution). 300 Marks

Paper-B English 300 Marks

Papers to be counted for merit :

Paper-I Essay 250 Marks

Paper-II General Studies-I 250 Marks (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society)

Paper-III General Studies -II 250 Marks (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations)

Paper-IV General Studies -III 250 Marks (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management)

Paper-V General Studies -IV 250 Marks (Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude)

Paper-VI Optional Subject - Paper 1 250 Marks

Paper-VII Optional Subject - Paper 2 250 Marks

Sub Total (Written test) 1750 Marks

Personality Test 275 Marks

Grand Total 2025 Marks

Interview/Personality Test

The candidate will be interviewed by a Board who will have before them a record of the candidate’s career. The candidate will be asked questions on matters of general interest. The object of the Interview/Personality Test is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service by a Board of competent and unbiased observers. The Interview/Personality Test is intended to judge the mental caliber of a candidate.
